04/22/2003 Entry: "Pixel Art"

I spent some time today practicing doing pixel art today, with an eye to making a freedoom sprite or two at some point. This is what my mobile phone looks like:

Of course, the main difficultly with doing sprites isn't being able to draw something that looks good, its being able to do it from 8 different angles, at different stages of animation and remaining consistant throughout. I have one sprite started based on a photo of an owl's face, but I doubt it'll end up good enough to use. The rest of the day was spent either playing the piano or playing the recently reinstalled Unreal.

Nice.

Almost looks like something from Habbo.

i think you need a method of prototyping the model so that you'll have a good frame of reference for what the different sprite angles should look like

If there are any of those factory-surplus book shops near where you are (e.g. the works, book depot, etc.) then they sell cheap artist manakins, which might be useful for bipedal sprites.

If I could do 3d modelling I could use that for prototyping. The way id did it (for Doom 2 at least) was to make real models out of plasticine and stuff then use a digital camera to photograph them. Unfortunately I can't really do either.

Well, an owl demon is nothing if not imaginative.

Thats as far as I got with it. It doesn't look too owl like now though as I changed the eyes to the shape a cat has to make it more menacing.

If I continue with it I'll probably give it little arms/claws on either side. The mouth looks a little odd, but basically it supposed to open up from four corners, which I thought would look cool.

is that a caco replacement?

Caco, or maybe Pain Elemental since there is already a (somewhat crappy) Caco replacement.
