12/12/2003 Entry: "The last day"

So today was the last day of term, me and [jw] got up early to say goodbye to [f] and [jg] since they were leaving at 8am (they have a seven hour drive home, including a trip through the channel tunnel). After that we sat down and chatted a bit about stuff, how quick the term has gone and everything. We sorted out arrangments for leaving the house, turning stuff off and tiding up etc. [jw] was meeting his brother and going to a gig in London at 4pm, and I'm going at 8pm, so it was the last chance we had to hang out.
So we did just that for a few hours before I had to go into campus to sort stuff out and go to my final lecture. That was a CC385 - Genetic Programming module lecture, not many people turned up but I'm glad I went. GP is a pretty interesting subject and the lecturer was talking about the future of the field and stuff instead of the more tricky maths theory he'd be convering previously. After that I had lunch and went home.
[jw] and his brother were at the house when I got back, but were just about to leave, so I said my goodbyes and they left while I got on with packing. That took until about 4pm after which I was pretty much alone in the house with nothing to do. Fortunately though they're showing a screening of an old Bill Hicks performance in one of the lecture theaters tonight, so I've just come on to campus to see it, in fact I'll be leaving the labs after posting this to go see it, then heading home hopefully just in time for when my parents arrive at the house, at which point we'll pack up the car and head back up North.
So anyway it's not been a bad day, but I've been feeling pretty blue. Even though we'll all be seeing each other again in like four weeks it still felt kind of weird saying goodbye to everyone. I think maybe because it got me thinking about what it'll be like saying goodbye for real next summer. I'm sure I'll see [jw] again after that, but with [jg] and [f] it's a lot more tricky simply because of the distances involved. Plus there was the weather, grey and rainy all day, plus some other stuff that's been on my mind a bit recently, it all added up to a fairly melancholy day. But still, I can't complain, it'll be a nice break (hopefully) and we'll all be back at uni and having fun and getting drunk before we know it I'm sure.
you're a geordie too?

Er no, I come from near Liverpool (though not close enough to be classed a Scouser).
